Mathematics Manipulative: exploring the cuisenaire or colored numbers strips
Goals
The "University course of specialization in manipulative mathematics: exploring the Cuisenaire Stores or Color Numbers" has as its main objective to provide participants with a deep understanding of manipulative mathematics, with a special approach in the Cuisenaire Straps. The specific objectives of the course are:
Analyze the basis of mathematical learning through neuroscience: participants will learn how the principles of neuroscience can be applied to improve mathematical learning. The latest research in neuroscience and how these can be applied in the classroom will be explored.
Discover strategies to develop with students to learn to think: various strategies will be explored to promote critical thinking and reasoning in students. Participants will learn how to foster a learning environment that promotes independent thinking and problem solving.
Understand the character of mathematics in the educational field: participants will obtain a deep understanding of the importance and role of mathematics in education. It will discuss how mathematics can be used to develop critical thinking skills and problem solving.
Analyze mathematics in the Primary Education curriculum: the mathematics curriculum of primary education will be analyzed, with an focus on how manipulative mathematics can be integrated into the curriculum. Participants will learn how to design lessons that incorporate manipulative mathematics to improve student learning.
Inform about the historical dimension of manipulative materials: participants will learn about the history of manipulative materials and how they have evolved over time. The role that these materials have played in the teaching of mathematics throughout history will be discussed.
Know different manipulative materials to apply them in the mathematics class: various manipulative materials will be presented that can be used to teach mathematics effectively. Participants will learn how to select and use these materials based on the needs of their students.
Know and master the Cuisenaire Straps: Participants will learn to use the Cuisenaire Straps, a manipulative mathematics tool, and how they can be used to teach different mathematical concepts. The different ways in which the cuisenaire strips can be used to teach the main mathematical operations will be explored.
Work the main operations with the Cuisenaire Straps: The different ways in which the Cuisenaire Straps can be used to teach the main mathematical operations will be explored. Participants will learn how to use the cuisenaire strips to teach sums, subtraction, multiplications and divisions effectively.
Be aware of the diversity that students can present: participants will learn to recognize and address diversity in the classroom, including the difficulties that students can have in the area of mathematics. Strategies will be discussed to adapt the teaching of mathematics to the individual needs of each student.
Promote attention to diversity through the Cuisenaire Straps: It will be discussed how the Cuisenaire strips can be used to attend to diversity in the classroom and help all students to succeed in mathematics. Participants will learn how to adapt the use of the cuisenaire strips to the individual needs of each student.
In summary, this course prepares participants to apply the principles of manipulative mathematics in the classroom, in order to improve the learning and development of students in the area of mathematics. Participants will leave the course with a solid understanding of manipulative mathematics and how they can be applied in education, as well as practical tools that can start using immediately in their work.
