Goals

Acquire the knowledge, strategies and resources necessary to offer specialized, individualized and inclusive care to people with autism spectrum disorder, understanding their characteristics and needs throughout the different life stages and applying methodologies that promote their communication, autonomy, learning, social participation and well-being.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

- Understand the main characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the evolution of its conceptualization.
- Identify the behavioral, cognitive, communicative and social characteristics associated with ASD.
- Recognize the first warning signs and the differences that can manifest in communication, social interaction and play.
- Understand the needs of people with ASD at different stages of life, from the first years to aging.
- Assess the strengths, capacities and potentials of each person, avoiding focusing the intervention exclusively on their difficulties.
- Know tools and procedures related to the detection and evaluation of ASD.
- Apply the principles of structuring, individualization, activity and inclusion in the intervention.
- Design understandable and predictable environments through routines, agendas, spatio-temporal organization and visual cues.
- Apply active support strategies and develop actions focused on the individual needs of the person.
- Know the possibilities of ICT as support, learning, communication and autonomy tools.
- Understand the usefulness of augmentative and alternative communication systems.
- Adapt spaces, schedules, activities, contents and routines in educational and training contexts.
- Use social stories, visual supports and other strategies that facilitate the understanding of social situations.
- Promote relationships with peers and professionals and facilitate the inclusion of the person with ASD in their environment.
- Identify risk situations related to isolation, exclusion or bullying.
- Understand the difficulties related to mental inflexibility and anticipate situations that may cause imbalances.
- Apply strategies to promote flexibility, independence and self-regulation.
- Use basic self-control, relaxation, breathing and self-instruction techniques adapted to the characteristics and needs of each person.
- Progressively promote the autonomy, self-determination and quality of life of people with ASD.

What prepares you

This course prepares you to understand and provide specialized care to the needs of people with autism spectrum disorder, providing you with strategies that you can transfer to educational, social and healthcare situations.

You will learn to better interpret certain behaviors and communication needs, organize more predictable environments, use visual supports, establish routines, adapt activities and use tools that facilitate communication, learning and participation.

It will also allow you to develop strategies to face situations related to mental inflexibility, unexpected changes or moments of emotional imbalance, progressively favoring self-control and autonomy.

In the educational field, you will be better prepared to make adaptations to the physical and temporal environment, organize agendas and routines, use social stories and visual supports, facilitate relationships with peers and pay attention to possible situations of isolation or bullying.
